When Walt Disney had Mickey Mouse running around medieval streets in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, he must have conjured up the idea after a visit to this mountain-top village, where the streets are so narrow that neighbours not only can shake hands from their windows but probably share the same curtains!

Away with the fairies! Casa Xana, Sierra de Albarracin¡FRESQUITA! SAYS the dumpling of a lady with rosy cheeks and a big smile, and wearing a shapeless, colourless frock that doesn’t look as if it’s seen the inside of a washing machine for a couple of decades.  ¡Muy buena! I reply, as she trundles off to her allotment to begin the day’s ritual of watering, weeding and digging.

Walking for wimpsRUBIELOS DE MORA is one of those wonderful Spanish villages that seem forever set in Sunday afternoon mode. In the narrow, twisting medieval streets within the walls of the historic centre you may see the occasional granny pulling a wheelie basket and you know it’s rush-hour when a cat gets up to stretch its legs after a couple of hours doze in the sun.

TOLEDO WAS the capital city of ancient Spain and was ruled by Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Christians. For most of the time all faiths and cultures had the freedom to follow their own conscience whilst living in a city that boasts the famous Alcazar as its centre piece. The former fortified Royal Palace is now a military museum and has been involved in just about every one of the many invasions in the turbulent history of this city.
