I Was A Smoker
My name is Norman. I live in Villamartin. I was born in Liverpool and started smoking in the 1950’s when it was the ‘in’ thing to do. There were no warnings on the packets or advertisements in newspapers stating that smoking was dangerous; it was an accepted social thing. Other members of my family smoked, so no one told me not to, despite the fact that I had suffered from TB as a child.
I moved to Jersey in the 1960’s and cigarettes were much cheaper there, so I continued to smoke.
In those days, smoking on airlines was permitted so traveling was no problem. Then the day came when ‘no smoking’ signs appeared on aeroplanes and that was a problem for me. I would smoke continually right up to the last minute before boarding and the first thing I did upon arrival was to light up again. Long haul flights were nerve racking.
My wife was a part time Health Promotion Officer and shared an office with the Smoking Cessation Officer - a new incentive in Jersey to help people give up. I had patches, chewing gum and all the aids available to me plus the ‘nagging’, but still I continued. I did not smoke inside the house but the living room was like a shrine with candles to eliminate the smell.
When we were invited to a wedding in Disneyland in Florida, I decided to give up and with the help of patches, etc., I did for eighteen months – then someone offered me a cigarette and that was me started again! By this time, many of my friends had become non smokers and they were continually telling me I should stop but even when my best friend developed lung cancer and had part of his lung removed followed by a long period of chemotherapy, I still carried on. By then I was smoking 25 a day. I ignored the publicity and the rising costs.
I moved to Spain 15 months ago and once again, with lower prices, I was soon smoking 30 plus a day. I was coughing a lot and had to have some teeth removed because of gum disease caused by smoking so I thought about giving up or cutting down.
In May last year, I was introduced to Mark Phoenix Murphy by two former smokers who had been to see him and had stopped so I decided to go along for one of his hypnotherapy sessions. It was a relaxing experience and I have not smoked since. I told a friend from Ireland about Mark and he also made an appointment in July; a 60 per day person. He has not had a cigarette since his session with Mark.
