Villagers in Parcent are celebrating victory in their fight to prevent the tiny Marina Alta village being swamped by thousands of new homes being built on surrounding countryside.

Three plans were given provisional approval on January 30th, 2006. A campaign to fight the developments was immediately launched under the banner of Veins de Parcent – taking the battle to the European Parliament’s petitions committee and Spanish institutions.

Parcent became a model of democracy at work as a new council was elected to oppose the plans and the protest continued in Valencia and Brussels.

This week, the Valencia government finally rejected the three PAIs.
