Pumpkin Seed Oil - Natural Prostate Care Remedy
Enlargement of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent diseases in men over 50. At about the age of 40, a man’s hormone production changes: the prostate cells are less stimulated than before when producing hormones. The prostate gland tries to compensate this by multiplying its cells, causing abnormal growth. Nearly all men are affected by an enlargement of the prostate but the magnitude and rate of progression varies. Often, the enlargement is minor and may not lead to ailments until very old age. In other cases, the enlargement is significant and creates serious difficulties. In extreme cases the gland, normally the size of a chestnut, grows to the size of a fist.
Experts speak of a prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) being a benign tumour. The benign tumour is closely located on the mucous glands of the urethra. As the prostate enlarges, it causes the gland to press against the urethra. The bladder wall becomes thicker and easily irritable and begins to contract even when it contains only small amounts of urine, causing more frequent urination, especially at night. Eventually, the bladder weakens and loses its ability to empty itself, so some of the urine remains in the bladder. The narrowing of the urethra and partial emptying of the bladder may cause other problems, due to accumulation of bacteria and residuals in the bladder, such as urine tract infections or residual crystallization and diverticulum’s.
Symptoms of BPH are difficulty in beginning urination, frequent urination and a feeling that the bladder hasn’t been emptied fully; frequent attempts to urinate; excessive dribbling after urination and lastly, a distended bladder causing abdominal swelling.
What can be done?
An special prostate diet is recommended which is low in fat, high in fiber, rich in vegetables, whole grains, fruits, with a minimum of animal protein. Coffee, alcohol and spicy foods should be avoided. Physical activity like swimming, gymnastics and walking is also recommended. Hot baths with relaxing extracts such as hay flower extract may help; drinking at least eight glasses of water a day (pure water with no chemicals) will help maintain fluid flow.
However, once enlarged, the prostate gland cannot be reduced. In an advanced stage, the prostate gland may have to be removed by surgery. This leads, in most cases, to the loss of sexual activity and in some cases to partial incontinence (dribbling). Therefore, it is important that men over the age of 45 start having regular check-ups and commence preventative treatment. Naturalists and homeopaths recommend that preventative treatment using pumpkin seed oil should be started by the age of 40. These cures take about 2 to 3 months and should be realized twice a year.
Pumpkin seed oil (Cucurbita pepo) is known as a natural remedy against the enlargement of the prostate gland. The seeds used for such a treatment are not from the familiar pumpkins in our gardens, but from a special species, which grows in south-west Asia. Also the actual mechanism of pumpkin seed oil is not very well understood: scientists assume that the remedy reduces the effect of testosterone. The contained phytosterols’ anti-inflammatory and diuretic effect most likely weaken the dihydrotestosterone (a male hormone) responsible for prostate enlargement. Patients who have taken pumpkin seed oil before surgery had significantly less dihydrotestosterone in the removed prostate gland. Pumpkin seed oil is also recommended after the gland has been removed. Pumpkin seed oil can also benefit women who experience excessive dribbling after urination.
In particularly severe cases, it is recommended to combine pumpkin seed oil with saw palm extract (Sabal serrulatum). Saw palm extract inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and hence the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. A high occurrence of dihydrotestosterone is generally associated with prostate enlargement. Saw palm extract (sabal serrulata) also prevents swelling of the prostate as a result of hypothermia or irritation and can be a great remedy combination with pumpkin seed oil.
