Pat Doidge faces the challenge of stepping into Audrey Hepburn’s shoes in Javea Players’ production of the spellbinding thriller Wait Until Dark. She takes on the key role of Susie, the blind housewife at the centre of one of the best suspense pieces ever written. Audrey Hepburn was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the film version of Frederick Knott’s play.

Pat, a respected nurse working on the north Costa Blanca, admitted: “It is daunting to play a part for which a famous actress was nominated for an Oscar. Susie is one of the most challenging parts I have ever played.”

Directed by Cherry Cabban, the thriller centres on the housewife and the invasion of her apartment by gangsters in search of an illicit stash of drugs that are unwittingly harboured in the home.

Looking forward to the opening night, Pat said she had to employ all her skills as an actress to be convincing as Susie.

SIGHT

“It’s especially fascinating because Susie is blind. It’s quite difficult to stop yourself reacting normally as a sighted person,” she said.

“I often go around the house practicing – I think the family are hoping I don’t do it when I’m cooking!”

Javea Players are performing Wait Until Dark at the Union musical, Gata de Gorgos, from Monday November 30th until Saturday December 5th – the sixth night being added because of public demand for tickets. Each of the charity shows begins at 8pm.

Tickets cost 10 euros and a euro from each seat sold will be donated to buy special stimulation equipment for disabled Javea youngster Ryan Kennelly. Tickets are available from the Humpty Dumpty, Javea Park or by calling Mabel at the Box Office on 96 579 4937.
