The Lions Youth Brass Band raised 608 euros
Third 'Costa Blanca Tour' for The Lions Youth Brass Band

LADY ELIZABETH School in Lliber once again played host to the visiting Lions Youth Brass Band from South Cheshire. A gruelling tour of eight concerts in six days gave expatriates and Spanish nationals a chance to enjoy the highly talented musicians of this award-winning band who recently gained a Gold Certificate at the National Youth Brass Band Championships.

Formed in 1989,  the organisation consisting of around 100 musicians divided into three bands, the’'Beginners’, the ‘Junior Band,’ and the ‘Youth Band’ are essentially self-running and governing with financial support provided partly through sponsorship from the Lions Clubs, but also through many fund raising activities carried out by the bands and their supporters.

Since 1992, the band has traditionally arranged an annual summer tour where they take over a hall or school and eat, sleep and socialise together between concerts. For the last three years, George Smith, a member of Jalon and Orba Lions Club, has organised the band’s visit to the Costa Blanca and last week, concerts took place in Albir, Denia, Benidorm, La Nucia, Moraira, Calpe, Lliber and Jalon. Every concert was enthusiastically received with standing ovations and the audience calling for more.

Chairperson of the band, Jane Stubbs, who has been involved with the brass band for 19 years, told RTN that the youngsters had performed brilliantly despite a very hectic schedule.

“We have a total of 37 musicians on tour ranging in age from 11-19 from the Sandbach area, and they have thoroughly enjoyed the visit, but some of the younger ones are beginning to tire. We will be flying back to the UK on Saturday, but the drivers will be taking the instruments back by road and we must say a big thank you to them. On our return to the UK we are looking forward to holding an end of tour concert in our home town.”

Here in Spain, all those attending the free concerts were treated to a wide range of music by exceptionally talented individuals. The concert opened with the Spanish National Anthem and each piece of music was introduced in English and in Spanish by a member of the orchestra. The outdoor concerts contained everything needed for a great evening’s entertainment, quality, skill and humour, and in an age where youngsters are constantly receiving bad press – the parents and organisers of this group of students should be very proud of the impact the band had made on their Spanish tour. Well done!!!

Jalon and Orba Lions President Stuart Aitchison, who has just begun his term of office, congratulated the band on their skills and thanked them once again for coming to the Costa Blanca. The Jalon and Orba Lions Club received its charter on 8th May 2007, from the District Governor, Antonio Gundín Fandiño, and now meets monthly. So if you are looking for a way of helping the local community, a new interest and a chance to meet new people then why not visit  their website: www.eclubhouse.org/sites/JalonOrba or contact them on 675 377 473 to find out more.
